The art of Jen Stark

Hello beauties!

Well, I love art, if you didn't know. I have my own little art website, which you could check out if you wanted to. No pressure or anything... (:

But the thing is, I suck at sculpture. I always have. Which is probably why I appreciate sculptures so much. What makes the work of Jen Stark so unbelievably amazing is that it's made of paper. Yup, hand cut paper, arranged into these incredible sculptures. Don't you just adore the use of colour?

Ah-mah-zing right? I wouldn't mind having one of these babies in my house...

Olympics 2012

Hello beauties!

Today is the day... I have personally been waiting for it for a long time. I am SUCH a geek. It's true.

I love opening ceremonies.

I love it  because it's so extravagant and beautifully planned, with so many people running around to make it happen. And you learn a lot about the country who's hosting whatever sports event it it. But the Olympics are always better to watch and I love it especially when my country's athletes come marching in. Patriotism never flows through my veins in quite the same way (except when there's rugby on. :P).

I love watching the swimming, because the South African athletes are so good there. I'm crazy about the gymnastics and the events we don't usually see except during the Olympics, like archery. I told you, I'm a geek.

Good luck to all the athletes. May your games go by smoothly, without injury, and may you do your best. For those athletes from South Africa, make us proud! We'll be watching you, praying for you and carrying you in our hearts. Good luck! (:

Will you be watching the games this year? Will you be glued to the screen tonight (or however late or early it might be on where you are) for the opening?

Let me know!

Worth the Read : David Eddings

Hello beauties!

So, way back when, I said I wanted to do some posts on books I've read and actually, quite a few of you said that would be cool. In the last time, I've been thinking a lot about books that I could recommend to Liani, who has just started reading fantasy and I want to gradually get her hooked to the point where she, like me, can't survive without it. Like a drug. (:

A great series of books for peeps, like my bestie, who are just starting out on fantasy, is The Belgariad by David Eddings.

The Belgariad is the first instalment of the series and consists of the top five books. If you have read them all, you'll without a doubt want to go on to the bottom five, which are collectively known as the Mallorean.

Don't let it put you off that there are so many books in the series (more really, since Belgarath and Polgara each have their own volume as well...), the books are quite thin, around 380 - 450 pages each. Still sound too much? Take into account that the regular fantasy novel is anything between 600 and 1000 pages.

These books read really easily. And what makes them great is the humour and sarcasm you'll find in them. Fantasy tends to be less funny and more urgent, the cause of the book always needing immediate attention and the party are usually quite serious in finishing what they set out to do. I've only ever found Eddings and Pratchett who do funny fantasy.

The characters in these books are brilliant, Silk with his smooth mouth, Mandorallen, the bravest knight in the world, who is literally too stupid to know fear and Barak and his drunken cousin Anheg cause for many memorable moments. Belgarath and his brothers are friggen hilarious and Pol is classic. They are incredibly sarcastic, hacking away at each other with wit and I promise you, you'll love it. Garion is the protagonist, a youth who is just coming into power and he is quite good as well.

Just a little warning here, the prologues are something else. It nearly put me off altogether, and I had completed the Sword of Truth series (which is some hard core, dark fantasy) by the time I started with the Pawn of Prophecy. The prologues are written as extracts from various history volumes, some of them truthful and some of them lies, spread by the enemy. By the time you hit the third book, you can appreciate the humour in those as well, but when you read the first and maybe the second book, it's tedious and boring to read. Sit through them though, and enjoy what is to come!

Your best bet would be to buy these online. I have never seen all of them together in any book shop before, except when you buy the omnibus, but I don't like those. I've been struggling to get them all together for quite a while now, but I can find certain volumes, and others I can't find anywhere. Maybe I should take my own advice and shop online... :)

What are you reading?

White Ink

Hello beauties!

Here's something that's been showing up all over the internet recently. White and skin coloured tattoos is a huge trend these days. I've never seen a mad rock this, but is't very popular between the fairer sex. It's great for it your workplace doesn't allow tattoos to show and you can get a few cool effects with it as well. I love the fine lace type tattoos done with white ink, it's so delicate! Must take hours to do though.

There is also the fact that it lights up under fluorescent lights and who doesn't love that!

But what I want to know (as an ink virgin) is this; if you're going to get a tat, don't you want it to be clearly visible? Please, talk to me on this subject! If I were personally ever to get inked (which is highly unlikely, since I have a terrible fear of needles. I'd pass out before the thing touched me! Really. (: ), it would be like a colourful peacock or something in that line. Do you have some ink? What was it like? Share with those of us who know no better! :D

Do you love it, or hate it? Lemme know!

Things you can do with doilies and lace

Hello beauties!

Some craftiness for you today. (:

If you have some of your gramma's doilies or some lace laying around, you can get up to all kinds of mischief on a Saturday afternoon, when the hubby is watching his rugby (or whatever sport he fancies) and the kids are playing outside! Pour yourself a glass of wine and get crafty!

Cool huh? I especially love the jewellery and you can cover some old handbags with doilies as well, but I couldn't find a picture I liked. Send me a pic of your crafts and let me know in the comments if you have more ideas for doilies and lace.

What I'm listening to

Hello beauties!

Monday again. Does it seem to you our weekends are passing us by faster and faster these days? Maybe it's just me.

I spent Saturday shopping with Liani at China Mall. Man, I love that place! We got some purdy awesome stuffs, and I can't wait for what we're gonna do with em! You'll just have to sit tight and wait!! :)

Sunday we watched Courageous. Man, what a movie! Tears flew in my house as we watched it! But it's really awesome, just as all the others from Sherwood Pictures are.

Right, on to today's post. My current favourite song is People help the people from Birdy. If you haven't heard it yet, yikes... Here's the video :

I have to say, I love her voice and the songs she's done overall. I like music with meaningful lyrics. I mean, I can appreciate some 'umbrella, ella, ella, ella' as well as anyone else... No, wait, I can't. I love Bohemian Rhapsody and songs in this class. If a song can tell a story, you'll have me hooked. "Baby, baby, baby oh" won't cut it. Birdy's songs have meaningful lyrics, so she's ok with me.

In my current playlist, I have everything from the Piano Guys to Linkin Park to Taylor Swift to Def Leppard, John Mayer, Queen, the Beatles and Jessie J. I can listen to old rock, the classics, and new pop as well. I love country (ever heard of Hunter Hayes?), classical and alternative. I just don't do metal and I'm not big on club or house, except for a select few songs. But other than that, throw it at me and I'll listen to it, except if it's girly pop. Like Biebs. I don't do Biebs. :)

What are you listening to? Current favourites? Let me know!
