Juice Cleanse - Healthy or Not?

Hi beauties!

We have Chef Shants from The Chef Mother back on the blog today with an interesting topic. Check it out!

Hi peeps!
And I'm BACK! Thanks for having me back again and without further much of muchness let's get going on today's topic. To juice cleanse or not to juice cleanse. Let's take a look-see and what the experts have to say about this very controversial topic.

The YAY-sayers:
Detoxing?
By Cristina Goyanes
Detoxes and extreme diets like the Master Cleanse can be controversial, but advocates say juice cleanses made from raw fruits and veggies are safe as long as you check in with your doctor first and keep it to three days at a time.

“Many people turn to cleanses because they feel off—they’re bloated and sluggish, dependent on caffeine and junk food cravings, breaking out,” says Stephanie Middleberg, a New York City-based registered dietitian. “When you eliminate toxins from your system, your entire body feels better and reacts both internally and externally.”

The Skeptics say:
Glenn Braunstein, MD, professor and chairman, department of medicine, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and other experts say our bodies have built-in detoxifiers and don’t require “cleansing.” Most also warn that no one should expect lasting weight loss.
But detoxes may shift you away from bad habits (like too much coffee, alcohol, and fatty foods) and help foster healthier habits after you're done, says Cathy Wong, naturopathic doctor and an American College of Nutrition–certified nutrition specialist.
Your move: Try your own home-grown cleanse using juices and smoothies. Or spend more for the convenience of some of the country’s most popular brands.

BUT! Before you do that, here's some info I'd like to add to that:

Juice cleansers are definitely the rage at the moment but is it a dangerous fad? Yes, it can be because after a week of having nothing but juice and water; you have literally starved your body of necessary nutrients and fiber and the only thing that juice cleanse has done for you in a week; is make you loose some water you were retaining! A flatter stomach? Of course! That's because it hasn't seen FOOD! So now, when you resume your normal mealtimes your body will be scared it won't see food again and it will store the food instead of burning it as energy. This is not a permanent weight loss solution so do not be fooled.
Even though juicing gives your tum a break from digesting big meals; it also slows down your metabolism and if you juice too much, you could actually permanently slow your metabolism. The body NEEDS a fully balanced diet in order to function optimally and eating five smaller and more nutritious meals, coupled with water and exercise will help you loose that unwanted pudge (and help KEEP IT OFF); the correct way!

Most people who juice have explained how its left them moody and depressed and even messed with menstrual cycles and sleep patterns because your blood sugar is too low at night causing you to wake up in the middle of the night and leaves you feeling crabby in the morning.

Besides all of this; we naturally expel toxins when we go to the toilet and pee. Drinking more water is a better detox solution than drinking juices and this is a fact. Drinking at least 2 liters of water a day can clean those kidneys and your liver in no time and the benefits to drinking more water are endless. (Yes, I am aware of the chlorine and chemicals in our water too; but even then; its safer and healthier than to starve yourself in the name of weight loss). To add; the juice has to be prepared fresh each time to avoid any bacteria because the juice is unprocessed and unpasteurized.
Health Fads are just money making schemes and be careful that you are not duped into thinking that there is a quick weight loss solution. The only correct weight loss solution is to actually put in the effort to change what you put into your body with a proper diet and exercise. I am sorry to tell you, but there is no such thing as a quick fix peeps!

In its defense; juicing can help to get you started on the right path, provided you don't do it longer than three days. - this is what some "experts" are telling you; but honestly, prolonged juicing is equal to slow starvation and can possibly open doors to dangerous sicknesses and eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.
Actresses like Gwyneth Paltrow; swear by juicing and she is rarely seen without her bottle of juice. Salma Hayek has been so devoted that she even made her own juice cleanser called Cool Cleanse.
With A-list celebrities backing up this juicing fad so determinedly; its hard to open the eyes of people to some of the dangers that lurk behind the perfectly veneered claims.

Ultimately; it is your decision but take it from this Chef Mother, who speaks from experience; juicing is not all its squeezed out to be. Before putting such immediate and severe stress on your body in the name of weight loss; make sure you do your research and gather as much information as possible.

And with this; I leave it in your hands. Till next time....keep yourself informed and stay healthy lovely people!
